107 Minutes

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriquez and Kate Hudson

From Director Peter Berg ~ who has brought us such action packed thrillers as HANCOCK, BATTLESHIP and LONE SURVIVOR ~ comes a real-life thriller about that fateful day ~ April 20, 2010~ when lives were changed forever, and so was the oil drilling industry within this country…this is DEEPWATER HORIZON!

Getting ready to return to the oil-drilling rig that he works on, we meet Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg), sad to leave his little girl and beautiful wife Felicia (Kate Hudson) yet again…

Heading out to sea with THE BOSS of the rig, Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell) and drilling expert Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriquez), it seems like it’s going to be just another day in paradise as the crew continues to prepare DEEPWATER HORIZON to bring oil to the surface in a few short months.

When BP execs decide to make a surprise visit to find out why “the unleashing of this beast” is way behind schedule, Harrell, Williams and the rest of the crew try to explain to these morons, that their rig isn’t ready to bring them their precious oil just yet…

Bound and determined to test this rig ~ and everyone’s patience ~ BP exec Vidrine (John Malkovich), is pushing everyone to get this oil flowing, forcing DEEPWATER HORIZON to bring up oil way before she’s ready.

As this premature drilling sequence continues at the order of the heads of BP, it is about to cause an incident of epic proportions ~ thus taking the lives of 11 of DEEPWATER HORIZONS Crew, and causing the biggest oil spill in US history to happen 49 miles off the coast of Louisiana too…

I give DEEP WATER HORIZON a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~From the fabulous acting of it’s entire cast, including Wahlberg, Russell, Malkovich, Hudson, and all the not-so-famous actors brought along to portray this real-life tragedy out on the big screen too…to the extremely intense and graphic scenes of what happened on that fateful day at the hands of the BP Execs on board DEEPWATER HORIZON, this is one true story you absolutely cannot miss!!! And know going in too, if you wanted BP to pay for the lives that were shamefully lost due to their greed over 6 years ago, all those emotions are brought back to the surface watching this film, as you live through the ordeal this brave souls actually went through. Astonishingly for me as well, as I watched this story play out on screen, was the fact that not more of the crew perished, as all this destruction and mayhem ensued. If intense action and real-life depictions are something you love to view, then you have to head out to catch DEEPWATER HORIZON at a theater near you, as this film is the DEFINITE MUST SEE THIS WEEKEND for me!!!

“You’re a fighter Jane…I’m giving you another shot a THE TITLE…”

Inspired by true events and fictionally based on Rachel Boynton’s 2005 Documentary by the same name, we meet “Calamity Jane” Bodine (Sandra Bullock) ~ who has retired from the political campaign scene after being repeatedly annihilated by her arch nemesis in the campaign world by fellow political campaign consultant Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton).

Pressed by former comrade Nell (Ann Dowd) and newcomer Ben (Anthony Mackie) to get back into the ring to aid Bolivia’s past President Pedro Gallo  (Joaquim De Almeida), Jane isn’t sure if she is ready to come out of retirement just yet, or to take on another campaign against Candy either…

Well, you can’t keep a good girl down~ so Jane takes on Gallo’s campaign and finds that it doesn’t take long for her and Pat to fall right back into their “sparring ways”. When Jane’s finally gets the fighting spirit back she is known for ~ she refocuses Gallo’s campaign to show his humanity, portraying that Gallo is “the best choice” to save their country from total deterioration. But, Pat isn’t going to go away quite that easily, as once again he seems to be one step ahead of Jane with his every move for the opposition…

As the polling numbers start inching slowing in Gallo’s favor, Pat begins to work tirelessly to get into Jane’s head, as he knows if he’s persistent, he can take her down this time too. Destined to finally take out the man who haunts her dreams, Jane finds that she too is capable of playing dirty…as long as when it’s all said and done, her candidate wins the election, which is what is best for the people of Bolivia…or is it??

I give OUR BRAND IS CRISIS a rating between: MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and WAIT TO CATCH IT ON DVD ~ Even though I was sad to hear that Clooney had to back out starring opposite Bullock for this film ~ as their stint together in GRAVITY wasn’t near long enough ~ replacing him with Thornton played out well, as the tension and disgust between Bullock and Thornton as campaign rivals translates to the screen perfectly! Bullock’s character being more neurotic and bitchy than we are accustomed to seeing was extremely enjoyable to watch too. I also enjoyed Dowd and Mackie’s roles along Bullock on the campaign trail too, and Almeida’s performance as the past-president running for re-election, who hires Jane as his campaign strategist was perfectly cast too, as he definitely has the “politician” swagger down,” assuring everyone that he is in their corner, whether it’s the truth, or not…OUR BRAND IS CRISIS is filled with good performances throughout, so if you enjoy the world of politics, or the sense of “selling your soul” for a cause…until you come to your senses, then you will definitely want to catch this film at a theater near you…

Bridge of Spies

Back for more historical tale-telling, Director Steven Spielberg sets out to share the true and epic drama of Lawyer James B. Donovan’s life, and his conviction and dedication not only to our country, but for his fellow man as well…as we venture onto the BRIDGE OF SPIES.

Engrossed in the day-to-day excitement of insurance law (ha-ha, just kidding ;), we meet family man and lawyer extraordinaire James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks).

As the Cold War rages on, our CIA is entrenched in locating anyone on our soil that might be spying on us for Russia. When our intelligence locates one Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), they move in to incarcerate him, and find out what he knows…and what he has been relaying back to the Soviets…

Needing a lawyer to defend his case, Principal Attorney Thomas Waters Jr. (Alan Alda) offers the services of Donovan as Abel’s defense lawyer, ~ assuming it will be a guilty verdict, but everyone in this country ~ including spies ~ deserve a fair trail. Not keen on providing defense for this “mastermind of espionage”, Donovan hopes that Waters will reconsider his involvement in the case, but to no avail…

Focusing on a defense for Abel ~ while trying to come up an alternative for letting this spy rot in jail, Donovan comes up with a plan to use Abel as a pawn to gain access to one of our airmen held by the Soviet’s ~ a trade of sorts ~ And who better to negotiate this release than the good lawyer himself…

I give BRIDGE OF SPIES a rating of: MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ This film is absolutely FABULOUS!!! It’s true, I do love Hanks and many of the films he has made over the last three decades, and since when has the joining of Spielberg and Hanks ever produced anything less than an extraordinary film ~ Like NEVER ~ and take my word for it, BRIDGE OF SPIES is no exception.   This film is SHEER PERFECTION from the first frame to the last ~ from the exquisite acting Hanks, Rylance, Alda, heck, everyone on screen…to the breathtaking cinematography captured throughout the film…to the historical significance of the storyline, that many of us may not have known anything about ~ including myself~ BRIDGE OF SPIES it’s absolutely one real-life drama that you don’t want to miss!!!
