MID 90’s – Rated R – 1 hr. 24 mins.

STARRING:  Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges, Katherine Waterston, Na-kel Smith, Olan Prenatt, Gio Galicia and Ryder McLaughlin

As his directorial debut, and writer of this screenplay too…Jonah Hill takes us deep in the 90’s LA skateboard world, as we meet youngster Stevie/Sunburn (Sunny Suljic), trying to make it day-by-day, living with his abusive older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges), and his single Mom Dabney (Katherine Waterston).

As Stevie passes by a skateboard shop near his home one day, he realizes that these dudes are pretty Sick, and thinks that learning to skate might be his way to escape his dismal existence at home…

So, Stevie befriends one of the younger boarders named Ruben (Gio Galicia), who introduces him to the older boarders who run the shop, and who are aiming to become pro.   Stoked at knowing these older dudes, and what they can teach him about boarding, and life too, Stevie strives to spend every waking minute in their presence, aiming to become the best boarder he can be…

I give MID 90’s a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN!  Okay, you must know going in that this film is a total “DUDE FLICK” with its premise, and coming of age storyline ~ But I have to share too, that I was totally blown away by the way that Hill managed to cast some truly excellent boarders, that could also crank out some really incredible performances, under his direction.  He also managed to get incredible performances from Hedges and Waterston throughout, making MID 90’s a coming of age film that will be ripping at your emotions for the entire 84 minutes you’re viewing this film.   I was also delighted and intrigued by the way that Hill managed to incorporate a total 90’s LA feel with this film, without it being so “in your face” that it took away from the ambiance he was creating! MID 90’s is one of those rare films that manages to take you on an emotionally turbulent ride, that at times, you may want to get off…but at the same time, you just can’t, as you really want to make sure that you don’t miss a thing!  Enough said…Just go see this film at a theater near you, but remember, its Rated R – and I also suggest that you don’t take the youngsters who love boarding, unless they are 15 or older…

WAR DOGS – Rated R

WAR DOGS – Rated R

Starring Miles Teller, Jonah Hill and Bradley Cooper

Writer/Producer & Director Todd Phillips – the man who brought us such comedic films as OLD SCHOOL, DUE DATE and all the HANGOVER movies ~ decides to go TRUE STORY on us this time around, as we venture into the lives of 20 something US military arms dealers David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli – SAY WHAT? – This is WAR DOGS!!

Making his way through life as a massage therapist and bed sheet salesman, young entrepreneur David Packouz (Miles Teller) isn’t quite too happy, or content with where his life is headed thus far. When old pal Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) comes back into David’s life, it seems that Efraim has got his life on a string, as he is dealing in government contracts, and making major bank in the process!

Happy to be a part of each other’s lives again, Packouz decides to partner with Diveroli in his new business ventures, as with a baby on the way, he needs to make some cash, and fast!

Learning the ropes of Government contracting and arms sales, Packouz is making his way to mega bucks, right along with Diveroli, on the shirt tales of our federal government, faster than you can say Iraqi War…

When our youngsters decide to go after an even larger military arms contract than they have previously, it seems that this large of a contract is realistically totally out of their reach…or is it???

Enter arms dealer and “terrorist watch list” businessman Henry Girard to help our boys secure THE BIG DEAL, as he has ways of circumventing lots of countries policies and procedures, allowing our boys to come in as the lowest bidder on these contracts by far.

As Pachouz heads overseas to secure the ammunition needed for this contract, Diveroli is back in the states, holding down the fort, and every prostitute he can hire too.

Feeling abandoned and discontent on how this whole deal is shaking out, Packouz decides that maybe he isn’t cut out for the world of government military contracting after all, as he tries to find a way out the crazy world of arms dealing, before its too late…

I give WAR DOGS a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN – Knowing going in that this is a true story, was a little disheartening to begin with…I mean, how could two twenty-something guys manage to get government contracts to arm our military, and more than once mind you…but as you see the whole thing play out on screen, you become very quickly intrigued and definitely wanting to know more. Teller is FANTASTIC as the mild-mannered Packouz, wanting to make his way to financial freedom as fast as possible, in order to take care of his girlfriend, and beautiful baby girl …and Hill is absolutely SUPERB too, as the mastermind and douchebag Diveroli – as he plays good friend one minute and total a-hole the next with an ease and arrogance all his own. You will be utterly amazed at how easy it was for these guys to deal with our federal government – and to make big bucks in the process ~ off of us tax payers mind you ~ as their story unfolds. And know going in too, that this film doesn’t leave the best light on Bush and Cheney’s time in office if they were your boys, you might want to sit this out, I’m just warning you. And the best part for me with WAR DOGS, was that this film takes so many twists and turns that you aren’t exposed to in the trailer, that it made me love the unexpected feeling of this film and the non-disclosed storyline even more, as sometimes you find that the unknown can be pretty gratifying, when its all said and done.

HAIL, CAESAR! – Rated PG-13

Writing and Directing team comprised of brothers Ethan and Joel Coen ~ THE COEN BROTHERS ~ who have brought us such fabulously entertaining films as FARGO, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and TRUE GRIT ~ have decided to go down a lane of Film History of sorts ~ as they embark on telling what could be considered a semi-biographical tale of OLD HOLLYWOOD, strewn with a real-life dude, and many fictional characters comprised from the likes of real-life stars too ~ so settle in, as we find out what really went on behind the scenes of 1950’s HOLLYWOOD…THIS IS ~ HAIL, CAESAR!!!

As head of Capital Studios, Studio Exec Eddie Mannix “The FIXER” (Josh Brolin) is always putting out one fire after another on his studio sets. All seems to be going as usual, as now the star of the studios upcoming religious biopic, the talented and charming Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) has disappeared without a trace. Meanwhile, as if that’s not enough to worry about, it seems that the studios next romantic drama is still in search of it’s leading man, forcing Mannix to bring in the young rope slinger and country crooner Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich), to take on this his first dramatic role…

While the studio is buzzing with films being produced at every turn, it seems that one of Mannix’s star actresses, the beautiful and mermaidesque DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson), finds herself in a little bit of trouble too ~ and who else to the rescue but Studio KING PIN Mannix, who makes sure that the Studios reputation, and that of his SUPERSTAR stay in tact…

When word hits the streets of LA regarding Mannix’s perfectly perfected PR moves, it seems that this info has also garnered significant interest from gossip columnists Thora and Thessely Thacker (Tilda Swinton), who want to make sure that THE REAL STORIES about CAPITAL STUDIOS and their STARS hits their respective press outlets a.s.a.p.

Will Mannix be able to keep everything under wraps at Capital Studios ~ and all it’s mess away from the press ~ or will the scandalous lives of the HOLLYWOOD ELITE make it to the outside, for all the world to see???

I give HAIL, CAESAR! A rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ Having loved classic Hollywood films and the filmmaking process my whole life, HAIL, CAESAR had me hook, line and sinker, from it’s very first frame!! Having lured me into the real-life Studio Tycoon Eddie Mannix’s life, the Coen brothers also had me questioning (and researching after viewing) the real-life element of each and everyone one of this films other characters. But, rest assured that Clooney’s character, Johansson’s character, even Channing Tatum’s character Burt Gurney is not a real person ~ although it is as if Tatum is channeling GENE KELLY throughout each and every one of his dance sequences. It seems that everyone, besides Mannix, is a composition of many of CLASSIC FILMS greatest, rolled up into each and every mesmerizing character. From Johansson’s depiction of her EstherWilliamsesque character, to HILL’s small, but pivotal role as studio flunky Joseph Silverman, the man who can be “anyone they want him to be”, to FIENNES spin as Director Laurence Laurentz, and his escapades with his starlets, this film touches every aspect of the supposed WORLD OF HOLLYWOOD from the 1950’s ~ even the supposed Communist regime too ~ which while viewing made me giddy inside, which all is leading up to me telling you ~ If you love CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD like I do, or you just want to catch Clooney and Tatum back in theaters ~ either way ~ you have to see HAIL, CAESAR and on the BIG SCREEN TOO!! This perfect creation by the COEN BROTHERS is a definite MUST SEE; I promise you…so head out to a theater near you to catch it, before it’s too late…
