“A Modern Day, yet classic “Who Done It” you don’t want to miss! – Kathy Kaiser, Matineechat.com

KNIVES OUT – Rated PG-13 – 2 hrs. 10 mins.

DIRECTOR & WRITER:  Rian Johnson

STARRING:  Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Ana De Armas and Toni Collette

Do you love mysteries?  Do you love suspense?  Do you love the game CLUE? Well. If you said yes to any of these questions, then let’s travel to home of renowned Crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), who has just celebrated his 85th Birthday with the entire family in attendance, and who has now been found dead at his estate…

Enter Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), who has somehow been summoned to investigate Thrombey’s mysterious demise.  Now as Blanc starts his intense investigation, a who’s who of “who done it”, is about to unfold…

I give KNIVES OUT a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN!  Exhilaratingly fun the whole way through, Knives Out is one of those films that keeps you intrigued more, and more through each passing frame.  Daniel Craig is fabulous, as the sleuth on a mission to uncover who was the culprit behind Harlan Thrombey’s untimely demise, and it’s so awesome to0, to see him in another role than 007.  Chris Evans is superb throughout this film too, although he doesn’t get quite as much screen time as I would have liked along the way, what time he does get is sheer perfection,  without any Captain America flashbacks either along the way! And talk about a star-studded cast – from Jamie Lee Curtis as the “perfect daughter”, to Don Johnson playing her POS husband, to Michael Shannon filling in quite nicely as the “Chosen Son”, with way too much pressure coming at him from every direction, Knives Out is one of those impeccably crafted films that everyone above the age of 12 should venture out to see this Thanksgiving Holiday!  Kudos to Writer and Director Rian Johnson too, as she has managed to create a modern-day murder mystery classic, that is just as funny, as it is dramatic.  And I have to give a shout out too to the fabulous marketing team for this film too, as those commercials on knives featuring Martha Stewart and Jamie Lee Curtis, is some of the best “out of the box” film marketing I’ve seen in quite some time!  So gather the family and head out to catch Knives Out at some point this Thanksgiving holiday,  as it will totally help you to avoid that awkward family drama you know is coming, and those political discussions at nauseum too, making for one extremely enjoyable Thanksgiving that whole family won;t mind remembering, come next year!

GIFTED – Rated PG-13

GIfted poster

“Evans performance definitely garners him the distinction of FATHER OF THE YEAR with this film!” – Matinee Chat with Kathy Kaiser

 GIFTED – Rated PG-13 – 1 hr 41 mins

Starring Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer

From the Director who brought us the romantic comedy 500 HUNDRED DAYS OF SUMMER, and THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN 1 & 2 – Marc Webb – comes the tale of a devoted uncle, an extremely gifted child, and a world and grandmother who believe they truly know “what’s best for her”…this is GIFTED!!!

Raising his sister’s child since infancy, we meet “uncle extraordinaire” Frank Adler (Chris Evans), as he attempts to do what is best for his extremely gifted niece Mary (Mckenna Grace). After evaluating her home schooling thus far, Frank decides its time for Mary to attend public school, and its socially abundant setting, because even though Mary is brilliant, her socialization with others takes a lot to be desired, and she could definitely us some friends “her own age”…

Amazed at the genius of her new student, and her very abrasive attitude too, teacher Ms. Bonnie (Jenny Slate) discusses these issues with Frank, and her principal too, hoping to get Mary into the type of environment that will challenge her mind. When Grandma Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) gets notice of Mary, and her whereabouts, it doesn’t take long for her to arrive, and attempt to get Mary into the proper schooling, and the right guardianship too…with her!

As good friend and neighbor Roberta (Octavia Spencer) tries to support Frank, and his attempt to raise Mary as “a normal kid”, it seems that Grandma, the school system, and the judge have other thoughts in mind for Mary – questioning not only Frank’s parenting style, but his less than stellar job, and unacceptable home life too, which apparently is holding Mary back from reaching “her full potential”…

I rate the film GIFTED a MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN!!! Evans is perfect as the uncle who only wants what’s best for his niece, and is willing to do whatever it takes to do what’s right! And as a father figure for her too – he definitely garners my vote for “FATHER OF THE YEAR”! Grace is extraordinary as well, playing the young genius Mary. Her performance is truly incredible, and here’s to hoping they remember this child and her stellar performance come awards season this year. And kudos to the casting agent on this film too – as Duncan, Slate and Spencer are all perfectly cast in their respective roles throughout this film as well. If you love family dramas, and want to catch “Captain America” in one of his best dramatic performances to date, then grab the entire family this holiday weekend and go check out GIFTED at a theater near you. It’s one of those heart-warming one minute, heart-wrenching the next films that you definitely don’t want to miss!!!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR – Rated PG-13 – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olson, and Tom Holland

As we venture into MARVEL’S next SUPERHERO EXTRAVAGANZA – the “Powers that be” of our federal government have decided it’s time to pull in the reins of our many SUPERHEROES, limiting their rights amongst us mere mortals…

Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and his followers, Including the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Vision (Paul Bettany) ~ and their newly recruited youngster, Spider Man (Tom Holland) ~ are all bound and determined to follow the NEW RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, limiting their presence and interference in the outside world…

Yet, there are those superheroes that feel this limiting of their power to help their fellow man is a grave injustice ~ forcing Capt. America (Chris Evans), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Ant Man (Paul Rudd) to join forces as well, proving that they are all here on earth for a reason, and that is to use what ever powers they have for the epic battle of good vs. evil

As the War between our heroes rages on ~ and devastating circumstances from the past are finally revealed ~ Will #Team Cap and #Team Iron Man be able to work out their differences in the end, or is this epic battle just the tip of the iceberg for what lies ahead…?

I give CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR a rating between: MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN & WAIT AND CATCH IT ON DVD ~ Okay, so I know everyone is heading out to the theaters this weekend to catch this EPIC MARVEL MOVIE ~ one, because it is the only movie popping this weekend, and two, we have to keep up the pace of where all of our Superheroes are headed next, but, I just couldn’t call this one a definite MUST SEE ~ and WHY YOU ASK??? First off, it was WAY TOO LONG!! I realize for some of us who haven’t had the opportunity to catch all of Marvels previous films leading up to this, have to get a little back story. That’s great, but for me, this part of the film was way too long and drawn out. Second, it seemed to move at a snails pace getting to the point of our Superheroes finally coming to blows…and third, not that I don’t think CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR turned out to be an entertaining film, as it is, but I found myself comparing it to my FAVORITE SUPERHERO MOVIE OF ALL TIME ~ (I saw it 4 times in the theater and literally can not wait for the Director’s Cut to hit on DVD) – DEADPOOL – which translated to this PG-13 rated Marvel movie coming across really subpar. They definitely raised the bar earlier this year…which translated to a rather diminishing excitement factor in my eyes, as I left the theater wanting MORE!!! But, if you love MARVEL’s SUPERHERO FLICKS, then you most definitely have to get a move on to a theater near you to catch CAP and the rest of our SUPERHEROES IN ACTION…but if you are thinking this is going to be more exciting, more engaging, or more fun than the last Marvel movie you viewed, you are going to be disappointed ~ just know that going in…
