About “A Star Is Born”

In “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga fuse their considerable talents to depict the raw and passionate tale of Jack and Ally, two artistic souls coming together, on stage and in life. Theirs is a complex journey through the beauty and the heartbreak of a relationship struggling to survive.

In this new take on the iconic love story, seven-time Oscar nominee Cooper (“A Star Is Born,” “American Sniper,” “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) made his directorial debut. He stars alongside multiple award-winning music superstar Gaga, who took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Shallow,” and who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper portrays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with struggling artist Ally. She has given up on her dream to become a successful singer, until she meets Jack, who immediately sees her natural talent.

The film also stars Andrew Dice Clay (“Blue Jasmine”), with Dave Chappelle (“Chi-Raq”) and Sam Elliott in his Oscar-nominated performance for Best Supporting Actor.

In addition to playing Ally, Gaga—who also previously earned an Oscar nod for the song “Til It Happens to You” from the film “The Hunting Ground”—performs original songs in the film with Cooper, which they wrote with a handful of artists, including Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell, and newly minted Oscar winners Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando (Best Original Song, “Shallow”). The music is original and all vocals for the movie were recorded live during filming.

“A Star Is Born” was produced by Bill Gerber, Jon Peters, Bradley Cooper, Todd Phillips and Lynette Howell Taylor. Ravi Mehta, Basil Iwanyk, Niija Kuykendall, Sue Kroll, Michael Rapino and Heather Parry served as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Oscar winner Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”) and Bradley Cooper & Will Fetters.

Cooper’s behind-the-scenes team included Oscar-nominated director of photography Matthew Libatique (“Black Swan”), production designer Karen Murphy (“The Light Between Oceans”), three-time Oscar-nominated editor Jay Cassidy (“American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Into the Wild”), and costume designer Erin Benach (“Loving”).

Warner Bros. Pictures Presents, in association with Live Nation Productions, in association with Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures, a Jon Peters/Bill Gerber/Joint Effort Production, “A Star Is Born.” The film is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is rated R for language throughout, some sexuality/nudity and substance abuse.

Review of A STAR IS BORN – Rated R – 2 hrs. 15 mins.

A Star is born

“It’s true, the 4th time is definitely the charm ~ as the much-anticipated directorial debut of 3 time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper has finally arrived, and A STAR IS BORN has definitely been worth the wait” – Kathy Kaiser – Matineechat

A STAR IS BORN – Rated R – 2 hrs. 15 mins.

DIRECTOR:  Bradley Cooper

WRITERS:  Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, & Will Fetters (Screenplay)

William A. Wellman, Robert Carson (Based on a story by)

STARRING:  Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle, and Andrew Dice Clay

It’s true, the 4th time is the charm ~ as the much-anticipated directorial debut of 3 time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper has finally arrived, and A STAR IS BORN has definitely been worth the wait ~ As we are thrust into the dysfunctional life of musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), who loves music making, but not quite as much as his constant companions: Alcohol, and older Brother Bobby (Sam Elliott).

When a chance encounter drops the beautiful, and very talented Ally (Lady Gaga) into Jackson’s life – it seems this natural beauty ~ with the voice of an angel, and exceptional musical writing abilities too~ is about to knock him right out of his boots…

Realizing how talented Ally truly is as their relationship blossoms, Jackson sets out to make her the “STAR” she is destined to be…

As they venture deeper and deeper into the world of Music, and the chaos that comes along with it, Jackson and Ally seek to find a place of “common ground”, within Ally’s skyrocketing career, and Jackson’s demons that he can’t seem to shake, thus putting a strain on both their careers, and their tumultuous relationship as well…

I give A STAR IS BORN a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN:  This film is so passionate and powerful throughout each passing frame, as you experience the perfectly cast Cooper and Gaga as musicians, lovers and soulmates.  And if the seamlessly orchestrated storyline doesn’t touch deep within your soul, then the fabulously magnificent soundtrack has to, as there is not a moment in time that you are not moved by the music within this film – regardless if its Gaga behind the mic, or Cooper performing as well.  I also hope that the “powers that be” take note of Cooper’s Directorial prowess with this film, as he made sure that every performance ~ including his own ~ was nothing sheer of absolute perfection.  Cooper also managed to make the small,  yet pivotal roles played by Clay and Chappelle, bring a palatable substance to this film.  I’m also in hopes that come awards season both Cooper and Gaga are reaping the benefits of their performances, as they are both worthy of Globe and Oscar nods for what they put upon the screen!  It’s hard to imagine that a film that has been made 4 times, can only get better with each passing decade, but its seems my friends, that this is exactly the case with this latest remake of A STAR IS BORN.  And I beg of you, please, please, please don’t wait to catch this film on the small screen, as you have to view this film on the biggest screen you can find, and with the largest sound system too!  A STAR IS BORN is truly an exceptional musical masterpiece of film, that even managed to move me more than my favorite Musical/Motion Picture – 2016’s LA LA LAND!

WAR DOGS – Rated R

WAR DOGS – Rated R

Starring Miles Teller, Jonah Hill and Bradley Cooper

Writer/Producer & Director Todd Phillips – the man who brought us such comedic films as OLD SCHOOL, DUE DATE and all the HANGOVER movies ~ decides to go TRUE STORY on us this time around, as we venture into the lives of 20 something US military arms dealers David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli – SAY WHAT? – This is WAR DOGS!!

Making his way through life as a massage therapist and bed sheet salesman, young entrepreneur David Packouz (Miles Teller) isn’t quite too happy, or content with where his life is headed thus far. When old pal Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) comes back into David’s life, it seems that Efraim has got his life on a string, as he is dealing in government contracts, and making major bank in the process!

Happy to be a part of each other’s lives again, Packouz decides to partner with Diveroli in his new business ventures, as with a baby on the way, he needs to make some cash, and fast!

Learning the ropes of Government contracting and arms sales, Packouz is making his way to mega bucks, right along with Diveroli, on the shirt tales of our federal government, faster than you can say Iraqi War…

When our youngsters decide to go after an even larger military arms contract than they have previously, it seems that this large of a contract is realistically totally out of their reach…or is it???

Enter arms dealer and “terrorist watch list” businessman Henry Girard to help our boys secure THE BIG DEAL, as he has ways of circumventing lots of countries policies and procedures, allowing our boys to come in as the lowest bidder on these contracts by far.

As Pachouz heads overseas to secure the ammunition needed for this contract, Diveroli is back in the states, holding down the fort, and every prostitute he can hire too.

Feeling abandoned and discontent on how this whole deal is shaking out, Packouz decides that maybe he isn’t cut out for the world of government military contracting after all, as he tries to find a way out the crazy world of arms dealing, before its too late…

I give WAR DOGS a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN – Knowing going in that this is a true story, was a little disheartening to begin with…I mean, how could two twenty-something guys manage to get government contracts to arm our military, and more than once mind you…but as you see the whole thing play out on screen, you become very quickly intrigued and definitely wanting to know more. Teller is FANTASTIC as the mild-mannered Packouz, wanting to make his way to financial freedom as fast as possible, in order to take care of his girlfriend, and beautiful baby girl …and Hill is absolutely SUPERB too, as the mastermind and douchebag Diveroli – as he plays good friend one minute and total a-hole the next with an ease and arrogance all his own. You will be utterly amazed at how easy it was for these guys to deal with our federal government – and to make big bucks in the process ~ off of us tax payers mind you ~ as their story unfolds. And know going in too, that this film doesn’t leave the best light on Bush and Cheney’s time in office either.so if they were your boys, you might want to sit this out, I’m just warning you. And the best part for me with WAR DOGS, was that this film takes so many twists and turns that you aren’t exposed to in the trailer, that it made me love the unexpected feeling of this film and the non-disclosed storyline even more, as sometimes you find that the unknown can be pretty gratifying, when its all said and done.

Joy – Rated PG-13

Writer and Director DAVID O. RUSSELL brings the TRUE-LIFE Story of Business magnate and entrepreneur JOY MANGANO to the Big Screen, showing us a multitude

Of reasons why you should be cautious of everyone in business ~ ESPECIALLY YOUR OWN FAMILY…THIS IS JOY!

Always dreaming up new and exciting things to create since childhood ~ Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence) has been dreaming of that ONE PERFECT CREATION, that can not only change her life, but the lives of her children and family too…

Surrounded by as much family dysfunction as one can possibly handle ~ Joy has managed to build a home with two children, a live-in psychotic mother named Terry (Virginia Madsen), her ex-husband Tony (Edgar Ramirez) and now, to make things even more “perfect”, her father Rudy (Robert De Niro) has moved in too…and he’s not been married to Terry for quite some time…YIPPEE!!!

As the bills continue to pile up, and it seems there is no hope in sight, Joy gets a fabulous idea while on a boating excursion with her father’s new girlfriend Trudy (Isabella Rossellini).

When the wheels of commerce finally start turning on Joy’s FABULOUS INVENTION, it seems that she might have to market this product in a new, and unconventional way ~ as she makes sure to cross paths with the KING OF HOME SHOPPING – the one, the only Neil Walker (Bradley Cooper). Now, finally it seems that all might be right with the world after all, but wait a minute…not so fast!!!

Now that Joy is up to her eyeballs in debt, and it seems that her family is just as ruthless as those on the outside trying to get “a piece of her”….Joy must find the inner strength to persevere, and show all these morons, exactly who she is…and WHAT SHE CAN DO!!!

I give JOY a rating somewhere between MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and CATCH IT ON DVD – I always love TRUE STORIES ~ especially when they involve GIRL POWER, and JOY DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!! So why rate it this way?? The flow of this film fell really flat in places, and even though I loved the casting, the premise and the inspiring storyline, I was hoping for a little more hutzpah from everyone involved. Lawrence plays exactly what we have seen from her before, Cooper too, and DeNiro didn’t have enough material to truly leave his mark along the way either. It’s not FABULOUS, but it’s not BAD EITHER. I truly enjoyed viewing the film, I’m just not sure it warrants dropping a some cold hard cash to catch it on the big screen, if you know what I mean….so you will need to decide, is it the film that you catch for that family time CHRISTMAS EXCURSION, or do you wait and catch this one for FAMILY NIGHT entertainment in a few months….YOUR CALL!!

BURNT – Rated R

Burnt Movie Poster

Producer/Director/Writer John Wells brings to life Steven Knight’s appetizing screenplay, and with enough goodness and delight to entice even the most persnickety of palates…so get ready to enjoy being BURNT!

Hell bent on returning to the world of culinary creations that he once knew – 2-star Michelin Chef Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper), is ready to once again take on the world by storm with his delectable delights ~ But, he might have a few small problems to get in the way of this plan ~ like his past life of drug addiction, oh, and maybe sleeping around with his staff too, but really, this is NO BIG DEAL…

Leaving Paris abruptly in the midst of his “hay-day” and now returning to London to strike a pose again, Jones reaching out to friend and restaurateur Tony (Daniel Bruhl), to take him on as his head Chef, creating the perfect life for both of them…

Determined to gain his 3rd star – the highest ranking in the CHEF WORLD – Jones comprises a team of old Friends and new comers to help him regain all his glory in the culinary world…

Jones is missing one small element in his recipe for success, Chef Helene (Sienna Miller), who he must convince to leave her present location…and join him, with all of his arrogance and crappy attitude…

With everything and everyone finally in place, Jones sets out to make his mark…but it seems that his past is continually coming back to bite him ~ and in more ways than one…

I give BURNT a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ I thoroughly enjoyed viewing this film ~ all 101 minutes of it! BURNT is as pleasing to the eye as I am sure it would have been to my palate ~ that is, if I could have enjoyed any of those incredible culinary creations I was viewing, as the cinematography is truly superb!! And yes, many of you may have already heard that Cooper’s “baby blues” do tend to draw me in from time to time, but this time, his portrayal of Chef Jones added to the mouth-watering effect I was getting while viewing it as well.   Miller is also outstanding as Jones right hand girl in the kitchen, and possible future partner in life…plus the short, yet enticing appearances by Emma Thompson, Alicia Vikander and Uma Thurman along the way, made for one absolutely scrumptious film that you are absolutely going to want to see at a theater near you. Even the REAL CHEF’s of the world have been giving Cooper accolades for his portrayal of being a CHEF~ as apparently his take on Jones is spot on ~ asking me to raise the question…do you have to be an a-hole to be the head Chef of an award-winning restaurant?? and I’m guessing that the answer is a resounding YES – Yes, you do…
