As we are thrust into a world where everyone has their very own Pokémon especially selected for them, we meet a rather lonely Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) who has yet to find a Pokémon’ to call his own.  When he decides to look into the mysterious disappearance of his father, he meets a beautiful rookie reporter named Lucy (Kathryn Newton), who is also in search of answers regarding his father’s disappearance.  And, when they happen upon Tim’s Father’s Pokémon – Detective Pikachu…it seems that he just might be the ticket to finding out what really happened to Tim’s Dad, and to uncover what all the other strange happenings are as well, in the world of Pokémon…

I give POKEMON’ DETECTIVE PIKACHU a rating between MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN & WAIT AND CATCH THIS FILM ON DVD:  Packed with Pokémon’s galore, plus action and suspense all along the way, POKE’MON DETECTIVE PIKACHU has something for everyone, no matter what your age.  Smith is perfectly cast as the son-on-a-mission to find out what happened to his father, and I was so excited to see him cast as the lead in this film, having thoroughly enjoyed his supporting role in 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.  Reynolds voice work is sheer perfection this time around too, because if you weren’t a fan of Pikachu before, you will certainly be a fan once you catch Reynold’s funny and charming work in this film.  Kathryn Newton was fun to watch too, my only wish was that I would have known more about Pokémon and its 700 characters going in, as there were parts where I wasn’t quite sure exactly where we were headed. But, luckily for me, a fellow critics daughter explained volumes to me about it after the fact, raising my understanding of what I had just experienced on screen!  All in all, if you love Pokémon, and have your very own favorites as part of your world, then you most definitely are going to want to see Pokémon Detective Pikachu at a theater near you this weekend.  But if Pokémon isn’t a big part of your existence in this life, just like it isn’t in mine, then you might just want to hold off and catch this film when it hits on DVD, a few short months from now.
