Based on Alan Stow’s novel “Here be Monsters” – Creative geniuses Graham Annabelle & Anthony Stachi join forces and devote over four years of their lives painstakingly animating their latest film – THE BOXTROLLS.
As we meet Archibald Snatcher (voiced by Ben Kingsley), he is ridding the streets of foul and menacing creatures, including Boxtrolls. Determined to become a pillar of high society, he contrives a plan to convince Lord Portley-Rind (voiced by Jared Harris of MAD MEN fame) to part with his prestigious White Hat – which only the leadership of the village may wear – once he rids the town of those cave dwelling trolls.
To expedite the urgency of removing the Boxtrolls ASAP, Snatcher conveys the horrible story to the Lord of how the Box Trolls have stolen a small child from the village – and he hasn’t been seen again.
Now, Snatcher and his men hunt the streets daily, ridding the village of any Box Troll they can catch.
Meanwhile, Lord Portley-Rind’s daughter Winnie (voiced by Elle Fanning) has had enough of her father and his arrogance – always worrying about his cheese – while ignoring Winnie and her needs. When Winnie decides to mosey out of their home one evening, she comes across a boy, dressed as a boxtroll …..how can this be? Winnie convinces the boy named EGGS (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright) to talk to her, as he shares that she is mistaken, he was born and raised a Box Troll, and that is what he is!
As Winnie and Eggs form a fast friendship, Eggs realizes maybe Winnie is right, he’s not a BOXTROLL, but why is Snatcher trying to make sure that neither him, nor Winnie, or any of the Boxtrolls divulge to anyone that Eggs is the small boy that was snatched many years ago…….
Will Snatcher destroy all the BOXTROLLS and EGGS & Winnie too, in order to gain his place in society? Will Eggs find out his true identity now that he is out and about with Winnie? Will Lord Portley-Rind ever be able to focus on what’s important in life – mainly his sweet daughter? Or will Snatcher destroy not only all the Boxtrolls, but the lives of Winnie, Lord Portley-Rind and Eggs too?
I give THE BOXTROLLS a B: You know going in that with the creative geniuses behind THE GOOFY MOVIE, ANTZ and PARANORMAN animating this film, you are going to be in for a treat. And anyone who has been blessed with growing up watching TV movie classics such as Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph, and Santa Clause is Coming to Town will feel right at home with the Freeze Frame animation they use, as it is reminiscent of those classics! The story line is a little quirky – trolls living in boxes, boys too – but their sweet demeanors and charm will win everyone in the family over to enjoying this film. I do want to share that the storyline and some of the imagery may not be suitable for children under 6 years of age, as parts might be extremely scary for even the bravest of little guys and gals. We have all been waiting a little while for a new animated classic to arrive, and BOXTROLLS was definitely worth the wait. Be sure to grab the FAM and head out to a theater near you this weekend to catch a showing of THE BOXTROLLS – it will make for one happy little family outing for sure 😉
