SECRET IN THEIR EYES – Rated PG-13

“My daughter was the thing that made me, me.”

Based on the 2009 Argentinian film that received the Best Foreign Language film Oscar that year – aptly titled – THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES ~ we join a team of FBI agents post 911, who are working to save our country from terrorism threats in LA ~ that is until their world is shattered by the inexplicable murder of one of their children – tearing them, and their worlds apart… ~ THIS IS SECRET IN THEIR EYES…

Gaining momentum as their careers take off – FBI agents Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts) and lead counsel Claire (Nicole Kidman), are headed for greatness, leading a team tasked with distinguishing any terroristic activity in Los Angeles since the 9/11 attacks in New York City.

When Jess’s daughter is found brutally murdered by a suspected terrorist they have been surveying at a Mosque nearby ~ all of their world’s are shattered, as why could they not have prevented this from happening ~ especially to one of THEIR OWN.

As the years pass by ~ 13 to be exact ~ Ray has never stopped working on this case, knowing he needs to bring Marzin (Joe Cole) to justice, once and for all.

As he tries to secure the help of not only Claire, his old friend Bumpy (Dean Norris), but Jess too, Ray soon finds that everything may not have been on the up-an-up from the beginning on this murder case – both internally…and externally as well…

I give SECRET IN THEIR EYES a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ Ejiofor, Kidman and Roberts are all superb in this intense thriller, as are Molina, Norris and Cole in their supporting roles too. Of course, having two daughters of my own, this subject matter was a little hard to watch, but the numerous twists and turns in the storyline kept me engaged the entire time I was viewing this film. I enjoyed the unrequited love theme throughout as well, as it allows for a break from the suspenseful nature of this film, making its premise a little easier to take. Having not had the opportunity to see the original Oscar winning foreign film from 2009, I can only imagine that screenplay writer and Director Billy Ray, tried to make sure this film was everything the original was, and so much more. The casting of such seasoned actors not only brought star power to this remake, but it also gives viewers a chance to experience a different Roberts than you have ever seen before…

THE MARTIAN ~ Rated PG-13

THe martian

“In your face Neal Armstrong…!!!!”

From Director Ridley Scott ~ the man who brought us such Science fiction trailblazers as BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN, & PROMETHIUS comes a space and time continuum for the ages, as we venture into his next great adventure with ~ THE MARTIAN.

Nestled into their tour on Mars, Capt. Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain), and her crew ~ Mark Watney (Matt Damon), Rick Martinez (Michael Pena), Chris Beck (Sebastian Stan), Alex Vogel (Aksel Hennie), and Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara), take on a severe storm, and decide things are getting too rough to continue their mission, and it’s time to go…

Watney gets blasted with debris, disappears from sight, and is assumed dead, so Capt. Lewis and her crew decide that they have no other choice than to head back to Earth without him…

Facing the tragedy head on, NASA Chief Officer Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels) delivers the bad news to the nation, and his team ~ including Vincent Kapoor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Annie Montrose (Kristen Wiig) and Mitch Henderson (Sean Bean), that Watney has perished….

But, wait a minute…not so fast… as an Injured, but still breathing Watney finds himself suddenly stranded on this desolate planet. Quickly Watney comes to the realization that he must muster all of the strength and brainpower he has, in order to find a way to reach NASA, and to keep himself ALIVE!!!

When one of the youngsters at NASA sees movement in the photographs returning from the planet ~ tensions rise ~ as maybe they have just received proof that Watney is not only alive, but making a life for himself on Mars. Sounds like NASA better figure out a way to get him BACK TO CIVILIZATION…and pronto…

I give THE MARTIAN a rating of: MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN & In IMAX 3D!!! Scott pulled out all the stops this time around, giving us a bird’s eye view of life on Mars, and what it would take for life to flourish there. Damon ‘s arrogance abounds one minute, as he is “THE WORLD’S BEST BOTANIST” you know…and then just as quickly, you feel his pain and torment, as things don’t always go as planned. This star-studded line-up totally works too, as everyone stands alone in their perfectly cast roles! Once again – this film should be viewed in IMAX 3D – as the cinematography is literally OUT OF THIS WORLD ~ and even though a few scenes along the way seemed rather reminiscent of last year’s INTERSTELLAR or 2013’s GRAVITY, if you love space exploration, or Matt Damon for that matter…or even if you don’t like either, you have to rush out to theater near you this weekend to catch this film, as all 141 Minutes of it are absolutely PHENOMENAL to say the least…
