“Funny, charming and perfectly cast, LONG SHOT is extremely entertaining the whole way through” – Kathy Kaiser, Matineechat.com
LONG SHOT – Rated R – 2 hrs. 5 mins.
DIRECTOR: Jonathan Levine
WRITERS: Dan Sterling, Liz Hannah
STARRING: Charlize Theron, Seth Rogan, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ravi Patel, June Diane Raphael, and Alexander Skarsgard
Quirky journalist Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogan) has had enough of corporate America and their sanitization of his journalistic endeavors. When a chance meeting puts him face to face with his former babysitter, and first-time crush, Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), it seems that she remembers their days spent together fondly, as well. Without a job, and looking for his next career move, Fred decides to take Charlotte up on her offer to make him her head speech writer, as she is about to take on the most challenging part in her own career, vying for the Presidency. When this working arrangement moves ever so smoothly into a romance, will Fred finally get to live out his fantasy from childhood, or will Charlotte’s aspirations eliminate any chance of these two ever ending up in a true romance???
I give LONG SHOT a rating between MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and WAIT AND CATCH THIS FILM ON DVD: Incredibly charming, and oh so funny all along the way too, LONG SHOT is literally one of those films that totally caught me by surprise, as the trailer totally lead me to believe this entire film was going to be a subpar cheese fest…when in actuality its super funny, and one of the best Romantic comedies I have seen in a long time.
Theron knocks it out of the ballpark yet again, as she embodies the position of Secretary of State with every molecule of her existence. She is so perfectly cast to play this role, that I can’t even imagine anyone else filling her shoes. Rogan is surprisingly perfectly cast too, as the quirky journalist with a crush that hasn’t subdued since childhood. I was also excited to see Rogan play someone except the loudmouth funny guy, as he really does have a charming personality, once you get past his foul-mouthed facade. Patel and Raphael are perfectly cast too, playing Charlotte’s assistants, that aren’t quite as sold on Fred, as Charlotte is. Add in the Canadian Prime Minister, played by Alexander Skarsgard, and you have one Romantic comedy that I’m in hopes will stand its own at the box office this weekend, although with it only being the second week for Avengers: End Game, it may be that no movies popping this week even stand a chance. If your favorite Genre of film is romantic comedies like me, then please, head out to a theater near you to catch Theron and Rogan in this very funny, and very sweet love story. But if romantic comedies even on your best day, aren’t what you prefer to see, then you might want to wait and catch LONG SHOT on DVD when it hits just a few weeks from now…and head back to the theater to catch AVENGERS; END GAME again this weekend for the 3rd or 4th time…
