“What an incredible tribute to those who died on the battlefields of World War I…THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD is an epic depiction of war, told by those who lived it, that you must experience…” – Kathy Kaiser, Matinee Chat
THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD – Rated R – 1 hr. 39 mins.
DIRECTOR: Peter Jackson
Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I, Director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Hobbit Trilogy, The Lovely Bones) and his editing team remaster archival footage secured from the British Archives, and join it with audio from many brave soldiers who were willing to tell their stories “back in the day”, and the result is an incredibly moving tribute to the young British Soldiers who embarked upon, without any reservation, into WWI (1914-1918).
I give THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD a rating between MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and WAIT AND CATCH THIS FILM ON DVD. If you are a history buff, this graphically moving film is a definite MUST SEE, not only on the big screen at a theater near you, but also in 3D! Peter Jackson painstakingly worked for years to bring this historic tribute to those who fought in the Great War to life, and let me just say, he made sure it was worth the wait! THEY SHALL NEVER GROW OLD’s masterful imagery is definitely something to behold every step of the way, as Jackson’s storytelling is apparent throughout, finding a way to not only hold our attention within every frame of this film, but also managing to take you from the stereotypical black and white images of a time gone by, into an epic and formidable colorization of what really transpired on the battle fields so long ago. This film will literally grasp you, heart and soul, as the soldiers themselves explain what their lives were really like during WWI! THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD gives you a real-life view into the anguish and perils of war, like nothing you have ever seen before. But, please let me share too, that if you aren’t into seeing real, very graphic images, of the horrors of what life was like for these young men experiencing war, then you might want to wait and catch THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD on a smaller screen, once it hits on DVD, as these real images can sometimes be a little hard to stomach, as they say. Either way you view it though, I think that THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD is worthy of your time and energy to experience this fabulous film, as it will take you not only into the horrors of war, but also into the humanity of conflict as well, as you watch these brave soldiers never question “why must I be a part of this conflict?”…but rather, “How can we get into this war, even at our young ages, to support our country, and to defend our way of life…”

THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD – Rated R – 1 hr. 39 mins

A documentary about World War I with never-before-seen footage to commemorate the centennial of the end of the war.
Let me start by saying THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD is not going to be for everyone. There are some things about this documentary that some people might find “off-putting”. For instance, there is a lot of graphic footage of what war is really like. They show the audience images of numerous wounded and dead soldiers throughout the film and yes, there are some things a person that is squeamish cannot “unsee”. Also, some of the veterans’ descriptions of their experiences may have an effect on you too because nothing is held back. Everything is 100% completely real. As it should be because everyone needs to understand what a soldier goes through before, during and after they have experienced combat. THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD is not the usual war documentary that you may be used to. It doesn’t show just a black and white picture of what happened, nor does it have some campy re-enactment by a dozen or so B-actors. No, this documentary does something unique that subtly captures your viewing attention. It starts off with the original black and white footage from the time of the first World War and as THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD continues to move forward, so does the restoration of the never-before-seen footage. And as you are watching these fantastic reflections from the past, Peter Jackson does something that is very tricky and creative…he puts all of it in COLOR!!! He does this right at the moment our soldiers are entering battle and because he chose this moment to put them in color, his audience is now even more attached to the soldiers on the screen. We can relate to them even more now because we are seeing them for the first time as real men and not as the stories we were told from our teachers or in the history books we read in school. The audience gets to hear and see something so unique, that you are somewhat transported into World War I in a way that you have never been before. THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD is bold, smart and ground-breaking. If you are someone who enjoys history and wants to see something very moving, then go see THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD in the theater – and see it in 3D (trust me…it’s worth the extra $$$). Until next time, thanks for reading.
