NO SPOILERS BECAUSE THE ROCK IS BIGGER THAN ME
There really isn’t much to say about The Rock’s latest movie SKYSCRAPER except that it’s just another action film. The story lacks luster, the characters have no development and it’s filled with loads of action sequences that would make Schwarzenegger’s late 80s early 90s movies green with jealousy. SKYSCRAPER isn’t a terrible film, nor is it a great film either…it really is just the next installment of the craziest things Hollywood can come up with for The Rock to go “toe to toe” with. Let’s check his resume for those not keeping track. So far, we have seen The Rock vs. :
- Space Mountain
- A Resurrected Mummy
- The Center of the Earth
- A Giant Earthquake
- The Rise of Cobra
- A Secret U.S. Govt. Counter Intelligence Agency known as CONTROL
- Three Enormous Rampaging Monsters
- And Vin Diesel
Now you must admit that is an impressive list and now The Rock has added a Skyscraper to it. These days, there is absolutely nothing “out of bounds” for him when it comes to making a movie. The guy loves working hard and pumping out film after film without worrying about what critics say. He only cares about his fans and tries to give them everything they want when they go to the movies. So if you are a Rock fan and you just want to see another generic action movie with tons of CGI, then SKYSCRAPER is the film to go see. But as far as my recommendation, I would tell you to wait to watch this one at home. Save your money this time because The Rock will make it up to you with one of his next 10 pictures this year. LOL. I give SKYSCRAPER a rating between MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and WAIT AND CATCH THIS FILM ON DVD: Talk about intense…SKYSCRAPER is one of those films that gives a new meaning to extreme with it frame, after frame, after frame of CGI! Johnson is perfectly cast, as who better than THE ROCK to take on the bad guys, and an inferno, all while being the best Dad EVER!!! Roberts and Cottrell will perfectly cast too, as the brave youngsters throughout this film. I was even excited to see Neve Campbell back on the big screen, but sadly, her performance came across rather lack luster throughout. I mean, I know it’s hard to go toe-to-toe with the man of the year, but I needed more compelling acting as she played the mother of two children in peril. I also didn’t feel much chemistry between her and her co-star, which made for some rather less than heated moments, no matter how much fire was blazing all around them. I also wish that they would have edited a few of the scenes along the way too, as I can believe one finger dangling episode 100’s of stories in the air, but I even question that the Rock could have pulled off more than one along the way. I also wish that Thurber would have developed more storyline for his characters throughout, as SKYSCRAPER had lots of potential, that just didn’t quite play out. If you loved 1974’s THE TOWERING INFERNO, or 1988’s DIE HARD, and aren’t afraid of heights, then I say, please, head out to a theater near you and catch this action-packed thriller. But is you are afraid of heights (don’t say I didn’t warn you, as some of the scenes will stop you in your tracks), or if you aren’t as enamored as I am with everything Dwayne Johnson does, then you might want to wait to catch SKYSCRAPER when it hits on DVD…as the scary heights scenes won’t be nearly as hard to take, and you won’t be disappointed to, by this film not being everything it could have been…after laying out all that cold hard cash at a theater near you…
