SORRY TO BOTHER YOU – Rated R – 1 hr. 45 mins.

Directed & Written by:  Boots Riley

Starring:  Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Danny Glover, Terry Crews, Armie Hammer, Jermaine Fowler and Kate Beriant

As we venture into a pseudo present day Oakland, we meet young and ambitious Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield), securing a much-needed job as a telemarketer…trying secure a more appealing existence for himself, and his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson).

And, as luck would have it, Cassius has been offered an opportunity to “the fast track” in his new job…which if he bites, will make the life he seeks, soooooo much easier to obtain…

But as our capitalistic society begins to squeeze on Cash ~ and his morals and integrity too ~ he must decide if this job is really the right path for his future, and for the life he seeks for those he cares about too…

I give SORRY TO BOTHER YOU a rating between MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and WAIT AND CATCH THIS ONE ON DVD.  Prophetically telling of our present-day societal downfalls, Riley puts a spin on the world in which we live, that will not only catch you off guard, but will have you stopping to evaluate the society we have ALL managed to create.  Stanfield is perfectly cast as the man searching to make his life better, regardless of what lines he will have to cross to gain self-acceptance, and a sense of security.  Thompson is also perfectly cast as Cash’s visionary girlfriend, who won’t compromise her beliefs or her ambitions, no matter what the cost.  Add in the spot-on performances by Glover, Crews, Beriant and Hammer, and you have one film that will tugging at your own morals, values, and societal acceptance throughout each and every frame.  It really took me a while to evaluate everything I had just experienced with SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, as it’s storyline feels focuses on the many attributes of what is WRONG with our society as a whole, as it also brings to light many aspects of our society that I have never been affected by, but sadly, many members of our society have to deal with every day.   Totally provocative, and artistically extreme, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU will be one of those films that moves many, while polarizing others who aren’t able to understand Riley’s storytelling views and objectives.  Regardless of where you fall within this spectrum, once you see it, you will join me in saying that SORRY TO BOTHER is destined to become one of this year’s totally original films, that will stand the test of time, as it becomes a true cult classic 😉
