I knew going in to this movie that I was going to like it, but I didn’t realize just how much I was going to love it. This movie is fantastic! It has everything that you want from a horror movie and much much more. A QUIET PLACE is filled with thrilling suspense, scary monsters, phenomenal acting, and surprisingly…a ton of heart and compassion. Right from the start this movie grabs you and doesn’t let go. You become completely attached to this family going through their daily lives, while these horrible creatures hunt them only by the use of sound. Everything they have to do is in silence and the movie expresses that in every scene, whether it’s by the characters using sign language to speak to each other, using cotton balls as game pieces for board games, or even just leaves of lettuce as plates for dinner. The movie is almost entirely silent and you realize this right away because the only sound you hear at times, is the crunching of popcorn by someone three rows away from you. That utter silence intensifies the viewing experience by 10x because just when you think the movie has gotten as quiet as it can possibly get, …somehow …it …gets …even …more …quiet. AND THEN THERE’S SOUND!!! And that sound isn’t even the giant creatures that are hunting our characters. No, the noise you hear is something mundane like footsteps on the ground, a creaking staircase, a waterfall, or even a toy plane. The sound in this movie is so good, that I wouldn’t be surprised if A QUIET PLACE didn’t get nominated for an academy award for sound mixing at the next Oscars. And…this is only John Krasinski’s 3rd movie! Where did this come from??? I knew he was a good director, but this movie has taken him to another level in my book. Maybe he just was in the wrong genre. Maybe he should stay in the horror movie category and keep pumping out fantastic stories like A QUIET PLACE. I say if the shoe fits, wear it John. He even co-starred in this film with his real life wife, Emily Blunt. Both of them knocked it out of the park with this one. Their on-screen chemistry can only be matched by their real life chemistry. They each put everything they had into these roles and you can tell they were passionate about A QUIET PLACE because it’s up there on the screen with their performances. This movie stays with you for days after you’ve watched it and it also makes you want to just tell people everything about it. It is definitely a MUST SEE on the big screen. Do it for the sound alone. It’ll be good at home, but it is great in the theater. Seriously, go see it. Until next time, thanks for reading.
