ATOMIC BLONDE – Rated R – 1 hr. 55 mins.

Starring Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodwin, Toby Jones and Sofia Boutella

Director for this go round – but also a Producer & stuntman as well – David Leitch (John Wick / Dead Pool 2) has decided to bring a very Wickesque Fem Fatale to the big screen ~ so settle in boys ~ as this one is going to make all of you very, very happy…THIS IS ATOMIC BLONDE!

As we meet ultra sexy MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron), she is being sent to Germany to retrieve “a list” produced by family man & agent Spyglass (Eddie Marsan), which has fallen into the wrong hands…

When fellow agent David Percival (James McAvoy) continues to fall short in assisting Lorraine at every turn, she finds herself seeking the assistance of the beautiful & mesmerizing Delphine LaSalle (Sofia Boutella), as they “team up” in more ways than one…

With the clock ticking, and every bad guy in Berlin is focusing on the demise of this Atomic Bombshell, Lorraine now finds herself under interrogation from her superiors, as it seems this case, and her mishandling of it, have totally gone awry…

I give ATOMIC BLONDE a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ Okay, let me give it to you straight… ~ every heterosexual man on the planet is going to want to rush to the theater this weekend to check out Ms. Theron – and they will definitely not be disappointed! Theron is perfectly cast as the femalesque “John Wick”, with just a twinge of 007 thrown in too, just for good measure. She manages to bring forth the moves and charisma of a flawless fem fatale, all while managing to show off all of that God has blessed her with, throughout almost every inch of this film! The only negative for me, as I watched this action-packed thriller play out on screen, was I needed it to move along a little ~ as the first half of it had the pace of snail…taking away a little of its viewing enjoyment for me, but the guys around me at the theater, didn’t seem to mind at all! But, even with that little issue now conveyed, Leitch totally manages to bring an ideal secret agent to life this time around too…making way for this ATOMIC BOMBSHELL to be back on the big screen, in no time at all…

KONG: SKULL ISLAND – Rated PG-13

kong__skull_island__movie_poster__by_blantonl98-dabasb6

KONG: SKULL ISLAND – Rated PG-13 – 2 hours

Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, John C Reilly

Writer, Producer and Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts puts his a 21st century spin on the tale of the mighty and magnificent Primate who has starred in cinema numerous times over the last 80 years – and who now inhabits his very own island, full of creatures you definitely don’t want to encounter…this is KONG: SKULL ISLAND!

Hell bent on locating a newly discovered island in the Pacific, we meet explorer and scientist Bill Randa (John Goodman), who has joined forces with tracker James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), Photo Journalist Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) and Lt. Col. Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) and his team of helicopter pilots to locate this new island, never before seen by human eyes…of so they assume…

As our team makes it past the great storm wall that surrounds this unchartered territory, they soon find that nothing has prepared them for what this particular island is HOME to…

Now, trying to stay alive with the hope of escaping this dreaded place, it seems that our adventurers may have wanted to rethink this little excursion, as this is no place for sissies, once they begin to meet it’s many creatures …including the fierce and mighty KONG!!!

I give KONG: SKULL ISLAND a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN: Surprised by this rating??? I was too ~ but this new tale of the King of Primates had me literally glued to the screen, anticipating how this latest KONG creation was going to play out in the end. Goodman is fabulous, Hiddleston is too, and when isn’t Samuel L. perfectly cast in an action packed thriller like this film!!! The storyline this time around seems a little fresher as well, feeling less contrived as the tale told amongst the frames of many of Kong’s previous films. Plus, as assumed, there is a lot of CGI happening on the screen this time around too, but it is so incredibly mastered to tell this particular tale, you don’t even mind that it’s “not really REAL”, and the soundtrack of this film is what legends are made of too!!! The only thing I truly missed from Kong’s previous films was the intertwined love story component between Kong and his girl, but with all the suspense, action, and deadly encounters throughout each and every frame, a lame love story may have just gotten in the way!!! So, If you love suspense, adventure and large creatures at play, then you must go see KONG: SKULL ISLAND on the BIG SCREEN at a theater near you this St. Patrick’s Day weekend!  Waiting to see this one any other way would be a travesty, as it just won’t be the same ~ and besides, then you won’t be able to see what happens at the end of all the credits this time around either 😉

PATRIOTS DAY – Rated R

patriots-day-poster

PATRIOTS DAY – Rated R – 133 MInutes

Starring Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, JK Simmons and Michelle Monaghan

Based on the tragic terrorist attack during the 2013 Boston Marathon, we meet Sgt. Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg), on the finish line of the longest running marathon in the U.S. With crowds of thousands at the finish line awaiting the arrival of their friends and family, terrorist bombers Tamerlan Tsarnaev (Themo Melikidze, and his younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (Alex Wolff) pull of the unthinkable, setting off two consecutive bombs just blocks away from one another, in the midst of these large crowds. When Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman) and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick (Michael Beach) arrive on the scene, the chaos amongst the injured and dying is overwhelming.

Enter FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), who secures the scene and takes over the investigation, reluctantly declaring this a terrorist attack, as his colleagues, in conjunction with Boston’s PD and soon to follow Watertown’s PD jump into action to find these two madmen ~ bring them both to justice!!!

I give PATRIOTS DAY a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ I was thinking that this film might be subpar, as that is usually the case when the studios don’t let critics preview films before their theatrical release ~ but apparently the feedback from LA and NEW YORK must have been enough, that they didn’t have to show it to the rest of the nation early. And that’s okay too, because for me PATRIOT’s DAY was not only worth the wait, but worth the $12 I spent to view it too! Wahlberg is fabulous, even though he is playing a fictional character created from the lives and storylines of numerous policeman from Boston, who were giving it they’re all in order to apprehend these fugitives. Goodman was superb too, playing real-life Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. And, even though I feel funny giving Wolff and Melikidze accolades for their portrayals as the terrorists, they really were perfectly cast and very convincing in their roles too. From the intenseness throughout this film (Yes, its graphic, which secured its R-rating), to the side stories I had forgotten took place throughout this ordeal as well, to the many real-life storylines being told all throughout this film, PATRIOTS DAY is one biographical and historical film that every American citizen over the age of 17, has to see. You will be incredibly touched not only by this films comprehensive coverage regarding the events that took place before and after this horrific attack, but by the real-life individuals sharing their thoughts with you at the end of this film. If there is only one movie you head out to catch this weekend at a theater near you, make it PATRIOTS DAY, so that it can leave an indelible mark on your soul too…

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE – Rated PG-13

image004

Producer/Writer & Director J.J. Abrams is taking us back into the world of CLOVERFIELD ~ only this time we are trying to avoid a chemical attack, or an alien invasion ~ or maybe neither ~ this is 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE!!!

Fresh from moving on from her engagement, we meet Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), leaving town in a hurry to regroup.

Flash forward as Michelle wakes up inside a bunker ~ purposely closed off from the outside world by it’s creator and guardian Howard (John Goodman) ~ where she is being treated for injuries she sustained in an accident she only vaguely remembers…

Luckily for Michelle, there is another person inhabiting these walls ~ the mild mannered Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.) ~ who has apparently worked for a long time to help Howard build this fortress to keep ALL OF THEM SAFE…

As Michelle questions if what Howard is telling her IS TRUE ~ which is that she cannot leave for years do to the toxic air that is at the surface ~ she finds clues that both corroborate and dispel all the tales that Howard is spewing…so Emmett and Michelle must form a pact to do whatever it takes to keep them both ALIVE….

I give 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE a rating of: WAIT AND CATCH THIS ONE ON NETFLIX or STREAMING ~ First off, I must share that the first hour and ½ of this movie kept me on the edge of my seat with the many gripping twists and turns that were unfolding on screen, but the last ½ hour of this film takes it from EXTREMELY ENJOYABLE to ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS, and all in the blink of an eye ~ forcing me to give it this lesser rating. Goodman is superb as the eerily creepy one minute, totally normal the next Howard… and Winstead and Gallagher are good in their roles too ~ but when you take a film that is perfectly flowing in one direction~ and totally switch gears for affect ~ I say, finish it off while your audience is engaged and following along, instead of taking it into another dimension ~ turning a good film, into something significantly lesser than what it could have been in the end…

LOVE THE COOPERS – Rated PG-13

lovethecooperssmall (1)

“Will the Grandparents of this lost child please come up and claim her…”

From the writer who has brought us such classic love stories as HOPE FLOATS (98) and P.S. I LOVE YOU (07), comes a classic family holiday comedy/drama, filled with the trials and tribulations we all seem to face over the HOLIDAY SEASON ~ so put that smile on your face and get ready to go head first into REAL LIFETHIS IS LOVE THE COOPERS!!

The Christmas season is upon us, and it seems that the entire COOPER CLAN is coming home for the holidays…

Married 40 years and finding that they don’t have very much in common anymore, Charlotte (Diane Keaton) and Sam (John Goodman) seem to have come to a crossroads in their relationship…and neither one is sure on which way to turn…

Charlotte convinces Sam that they need to celebrate one more Christmas together as a “HAPPY FAMILY”, so they embark upon picking up their grandkids, so they can enjoy a few family traditions together before the BIG MAN arrives…

Trying to keep his head above water as he makes the best of his new single life – yeah right ~and loosing his job ~ son Hank (Ed Helms) is trying to find a new job before his ex-wife Angie (Alex Borstein) or his parents find out his he is now officially ~ A TOTAL LOOSER

And just arriving at the airport, and deciding to hang there for hours, instead of heading home to be judged by her mother, we meet the beautiful and totally screwed up daughter Eleanor (Olivia Wilde), who is in a relationship with a married man, but finds comfort in getting to know the military guy she just met named Joe (Jake Lacy) and who she has just invited to go home with her…

Even Grandpa (Alan Arkin) is struggling with his love life this year, as the beautiful young waitress named Ruby (Amanda Seyfried) that he visits daily, has just informed him that she is leaving to start a new life far, far away from here…

Can you say ~ ONE SCREWED UP FAMILY…but, like all families, beyond the quirks and idiosyncrasies of everyone involved, is a group of fantastic people that we all just HAVE TO LOVE…

I give LOVE THE COOPERS a rating between MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN and WAIT AND CATCH THIS ONE ON DVD ~ Since I absolutely love a few of the actors in this VERY REAL CHRISTMAS Com/Dram, I was totally excited to catch the 1st Christmas release of the season. Keaton plays the same type of character we have seen from her again, and again, and again – Mom with a heart of gold, but always using her judgmental tone…But, Goodman is a little off character this time around, playing the cast aside husband, hoping for a glimpse of the woman he fell in love with to reappear before its too late ~ and Helms and Wilde are good too ~ as the son and daughter who try to be “the best they can be in their parents eyes, but always seeming to fall a little short in their own minds…” Toss in the acting prowess of Arkin, Seyfried, Tomei, and Mackey, and you have a compilation of superb actors to round out the many intertwining storylines contained in this film. And without giving too much away, don’t leave without seeing each and every frame, even if you are waiting to catch it this one on DVD, as you must catch who narrates this film…cause it makes all the difference in the world once you finally do 😉
