Review of AT ETERNITY’S GATE:  Rated PG-13 – 1 h 50 mins

“A TRUE MASTERPIECE!  Dafoe’s performance is intense, and oh, so real!”  Kathy Kaiser –

AT ETERNITY’S GATE:  Rated PG-13 – 1 h 50 mins

DIRECTOR:  Julian Schnabel

WRITERS:  Jean-Claude Carriere, Louise Kugelberg, Julian Schnabel

STARRING: Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, and Oscar Issac

As we venture into the deeply passionate, but rather dysfunctional existence of painter Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe) it seems that nature is his subject of choice, and living life daily in reality, is a constant struggle.

Determined to paint, even though apparently no one is seeing the beauty he does while painting them, he is forced to take refuge wherever he can, as his brother Theo (Rupert Friend) helps keep him a float, so that he can do what he loves…

When van Gogh befriends French post-impressionist artist, Paul Gauguin (Oscar Isaac), it seems that their friendship and subsequent co-habitation, might just be what the Dr. ordered to keep van Gogh from going totally mad…

As their friendship ends when Gauguin feels a need to return to Paris, van Gogh’s mind, spirit and body slowly start to deteriorate, leaving him with focus on the only enjoyment he has in life…Painting.

I give AT ETERNITY’s GATE a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN!  Even though I struggled at the beginning of this film to truly get engaged with its cryptic cinematography, and slow and prolonged storytelling, about 15 mins in it was as if the film had found its rhythm, conveying a true-life story that was seamless and mesmerizing till the last frame came into view.  Dafoe’s performance of van Gogh is truly award worthy, as he takes you into the multidimensional existence of a true artist, and  madman.  And even though this storyline brings to light van Gogh’s schizophrenic existence, Dafoe manages to do it in a way that its poignant, and very meaningful.  I also enjoyed Isaac’s small, but important role in this film too, as he played perfectly off of Dafoe’s non-existent reality, and neediness.  AT ETERNITY’S GATE will allow you to experience the majestic way that van Gogh shared his life experiences through his work, while also depicting the madness that consumed him, right up until his untimely death, at the mere age of 37…

PATRIOTS DAY – Rated R – 133 MInutes

Starring Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, JK Simmons and Michelle Monaghan

Based on the tragic terrorist attack during the 2013 Boston Marathon, we meet Sgt. Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg), on the finish line of the longest running marathon in the U.S. With crowds of thousands at the finish line awaiting the arrival of their friends and family, terrorist bombers Tamerlan Tsarnaev (Themo Melikidze, and his younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (Alex Wolff) pull of the unthinkable, setting off two consecutive bombs just blocks away from one another, in the midst of these large crowds. When Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman) and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick (Michael Beach) arrive on the scene, the chaos amongst the injured and dying is overwhelming.

Enter FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), who secures the scene and takes over the investigation, reluctantly declaring this a terrorist attack, as his colleagues, in conjunction with Boston’s PD and soon to follow Watertown’s PD jump into action to find these two madmen ~ bring them both to justice!!!

I give PATRIOTS DAY a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ I was thinking that this film might be subpar, as that is usually the case when the studios don’t let critics preview films before their theatrical release ~ but apparently the feedback from LA and NEW YORK must have been enough, that they didn’t have to show it to the rest of the nation early. And that’s okay too, because for me PATRIOT’s DAY was not only worth the wait, but worth the $12 I spent to view it too! Wahlberg is fabulous, even though he is playing a fictional character created from the lives and storylines of numerous policeman from Boston, who were giving it they’re all in order to apprehend these fugitives. Goodman was superb too, playing real-life Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. And, even though I feel funny giving Wolff and Melikidze accolades for their portrayals as the terrorists, they really were perfectly cast and very convincing in their roles too. From the intenseness throughout this film (Yes, its graphic, which secured its R-rating), to the side stories I had forgotten took place throughout this ordeal as well, to the many real-life storylines being told all throughout this film, PATRIOTS DAY is one biographical and historical film that every American citizen over the age of 17, has to see. You will be incredibly touched not only by this films comprehensive coverage regarding the events that took place before and after this horrific attack, but by the real-life individuals sharing their thoughts with you at the end of this film. If there is only one movie you head out to catch this weekend at a theater near you, make it PATRIOTS DAY, so that it can leave an indelible mark on your soul too…

Prepare to get schooled with a new poster from MIDDLE SCHOOL: THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE – Hits theaters October 7th

Prepare to get schooled with a new poster from MIDDLE SCHOOL: THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE. Based on the bestselling book series from author James Patterson, the upcoming comedy starring Griffin Gluck, Lauren Graham, Rob Riggle, Thomas Barbusca, Isabela Moner, Andy Daly and Adam Pally opens in theaters October 7th!

Starring Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster

When left in a desperate situation to save his family’s farm, one divorced father and his jail-bird brother turn to bank robbing as their only choice to make thing’s right in their world ~ This is HELL OR HIGH WATER!

Divorced, yet trying to provide for his ex-wife and sons the best way he knows how, Toby Howard (Chris Pine) hatches a plan with his brother, ex-con Tanner Howard (Ben Foster), to save his family farm, after the death of his poor sweet mama.

With the bank breathing down their necks, wanting to foreclose on their homestead, Toby and Tanner decide the best way to stop the bank, and save their families home, is to acquire enough cash ~ and fast ~ to make the bastards go away.

When a slew of bank robberies are reported to lawman Alberto Parker (Gil Birmingham) he decides that this might just be the perfect case for soon-to-retire fellow Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) to take on as his last hurrah…

As Parker and Hamilton soon find ~ these aren’t your average bank-robbers ~ as they apparently have a liking for hitting just one kind of bank, and aren’t stealing exorbitant sums of money either…leaving our lawmen searching for more clues…as, none of this case is really making sense…

I give HELL OR HIGH WATER a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN ~ From the intense and powerful storyline from Taylor Sheridan (He also wrote last year’s SICARIO) to the gritty, commanding and epic performances hitting the screen from Pine, Foster and Bridges, HELL OR HIGH WATER is one incredibly raw and penetrating depiction of what lengths a man will go to, to save what his families worked all their lives for. This film is by far the best action-packed, cowboyesque film I have seen in years, so whether you have a love for lawmen, the picturesque states of Texas or New Mexico, or you just have a longing for Chris Pine’s baby blues or Jeff Bridges gravely voice, doesn’t matter, you just need to head on out to a theater near you this weekend to catch HELL OF HIGH WATER, as catching it on TV later, just will not to this film justice!!!
