“McAvoy is superb, regardless of which personality he chooses…”
SPLIT – Rated PG-13 – 1 hour and 57 Minutes
Starring James McAvoy, Betty Buckley, Haley Lu Richardson, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jessica Sula
From the Writer and Director who has brought new meaning to the words suspense, panic, dismay and terror over the years, with such films as THE SIXTH SENSE, SIGNS, LADY IN THE WATER and THE VISIT ~ M. Night Shyamalan ~ comes a film reminiscent of 1976’s SYBIL, and which showcases a man trying to deal with his 24 different personalities, ranging the spectrum of age, and total dysfunction…THIS IS SPLIT!!!
When birthday girl Claire Benoit (Haley Lu Richardson), and her friends Marcia (Jessica Sula) and Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) find themselves being kidnapped by super-creeper Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), all they can focus on is how to get away from this mad man.
As the girls are exposed very quickly to Kevin’s “alter-egos”, they realize that they are going to have to be on their game in dealing with whoever enters their room, as one minute Kevin is a woman named Patricia, the next a man named Dennis, and eventually, even a childlike personality emerges named Hedwick.
Casey decides that the best-case scenario for them all is to focus on befriending Hedwick, and gaining his trust. Not wanting to wait around for this plan to play out, both Claire and Marcia decide to enact other options for their own escapes…while Kevin’s additional personalities are beginning to surface…including the one they all really don’t want to encounter…THE BEAST!!!
Will the girls make it out of the den of terror they are being held in? Will the good Doctor Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley) be able to help in the girls release, or will Kevin’s many personalities pick the perfect one to end it all for everyone involved???
I give SPLIT a rating of MUST SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN! Even though I don’t usually enjoy films filled with suspense and terror around every turn, M. Night Shyamalan manages to write and direct a film that is absolutely fabulous for this genre of film. This film is even holding a candle to my fav of his films ~ THE SIXTH SENSE!!! McAvoy should be Oscar bound with his performance, if they remember by years end…his smooth transition from person –to-person in his performance is sheer perfection, as he manages to go from really scary one minute, to totally charming the next. Betty Buckley is on her game too, playing the Dr. that seems to understand all of Kevin’s multiple personalities, and wants to help him learn to manage them in some way. Taylor-Joy is also very good playing the stoic and unsocial teenager, who ends up being the smartest one when its all said and done. If you like suspense filled drama, with a tinge of scary thrown in for good measure, then you have to check out SPLIT this weekend at a theater near you. And if you aren’t into blood and gore like me, its okay to view this film too…as Shyamalan managed to pull this one off, with just a tinge of that stuff too!!!
